As Road Safety week continues, today has been designated "Tyre Safety Day", when all road users are urged to check their tyres.
Defective tyres are a contributing factor in an average of 14 road deaths per year.
Every month, 8 and a half thousand vehicles are found to be dangerously defective because of the condition of their tyres.
Free tyre checks are being offered at Irish Tyre Industry Association dealers across the country this week.
Gardai and the Road Safety Authority, based in Ballina, have teamed up for tyre safety day, to remind motorists that driving on dangerous or under-inflated tyres puts their lives and the lives of other road users at risk.
