A Castlebar councillor is calling for the redevelopment of the former Imperial Hotel in Castlebar, eight years on from the county council purchasing the building.
Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere will be raising the matter at tomorrow’s onthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District, and will be calling for the refurbishment of the historic building on the Mall, which he says is now gone into “rack and ruin”.
The site was once a grand hotel in the heart of the county town and is synonymous with Michael Davitt and the Land War period of Irish history in the late 1800s.
Councillor Deer is urging Mayo County council to set about redeveloping what he describes as “the pinnacle site of the county’s history” in memory of Michael Davitt.
He believes the location could be used as a tourist office, coffee shop, and could be used as a meeting rooms for Castlebar Municipal District.
