Bishop John Fleming, the Bishop of Killala, has not agreed to ordain woman to the priesthood, despite a front page story in today's Irish Examiner. That was confirmed today by a founding member of the Association of Catholic Priests, Killala based priest Fr Brendan Hoban.
A recent survey in the diocese showed strong support , 69 percent backing, for the ordination of women priest.
The Killala diocese is made up of 22 mainly rural parishes and analysis of priest numbers show that by 2037, the diocese will only be served by a half a dozen priests.
Parishioners across the diocese met to discuss their concerns and views and the strong backing for female priests was among the findings of the local forum.
Bishop Fleming has agreed to do everything he can to sustain the church locally and to send any findings, outside the remit of the diocese, like the ordination of women, onto the Irish Bishops and ultimately to Rome for consideration.
Speaking to Midwest Radio today Fr Hoban says there are things that the Killala diocese must change to sustain the church into the future.
