A teacher living in Knock is one of five teachers in Connacht named on the shortlist for the inaugural Teachers Inspire Ireland award.
The initiative was launched by Dublin City University earlier this year to highlight the contribution made by teachers in Irish society.
Members of the public have nominated teachers that transformed their lives or that of their local community, and 20 teachers - five from each province - have now been shortlisted from over 400 entries.
Declan Quinn who lives in Knock and is principal of Dunmore Community School is among those shortlisted.
Mr Quinn was nominated by the parent of a student who experienced mental health difficulties and has been strongly supported by the principal.
Also on the shortlist are Sandra Carroll, a teacher at Holy Rosary College in Mountbellew, former Christian Brother Seamas Cassidy from Tuam CBS, Elaine O'Malley, Acting Principal of Merlin Woods Primary School in Galway City, and Teresa Toolan, a retired teacher who taught at Mullaghroe National School in Sligo.
The Teachers Inspire Ireland gala event will take place at The Helix in Dublin on Friday 4th October at which four of the shortlisted teachers - one from each province - will receive an award.
