A new Interdepartmental Committee on Island Development will hold its first meeting next Tuesday, 24th September.

Minister of State for the Islands, Galway-based Séan Kyne says he knows the significance of the islands to our heritage and language, and knows the support island communities need to continue to be sustainable.

In recent years, priority has been given to the development of island infrastructure, and subsidising access to the islands, which Minister Kyne says has improved the quality of life for island populations.

To tackle the challenges that island communities face, and Government is setting up an Indepartmental Group, and Minister Kyne says he's looking forward to working with officials from across all of the relevant Government Departments to develop a cross-Government Islands Policy and action plan.

The first meeting takes place next Tuesday, and the committee will consult with island communities to ensure their voices are at the heart of the policy.
