The State Pathologist is due to arrive shortly at the scene of a fatal shooting near Ballyhaunis last night.
A man in his 60's was shot dead at a house in Coogue, and a man in his 80's has been arrested.The fatal shooting occurred shortly before midnight.
It appears the deceased man was visiting the older man, and Gardai are investigating the circumstances which led to the shooting.
Both men were known to each other, and locals believe the deceased may have been mistaken for an intruder but this has not been confirmed.
The scene at a rural farmhouse near Coogue school has been sealed off pending a forensic examination.
Supt. Gabriel Moran has confirmed that the State Pathologist and scenes of crime investigators are due at the house early this afternoon.
The remains of the deceased man will then be taken to Mayo University Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The homeowner, a man in his 80's who was arrested in relation to the incident is still being detained at Castlebar Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
His period of detention has been extended by a further 6 hours.
Coogue is in the parish of Knock, and parish priest Fr Richard Gibbons was called to the scene in the early hours of this morning.
