The Office of Public Works should lower the sluice gates in Galway from mid-September, to save South Mayo from flooding this Winter.
That's according to FG Councillor Patsy O'Brien who raised the matter at yesterday's meeting of the Claremorris / Swinford Municipal District.
Councillor O'Brien got the support of his council colleagues to write to the OPW, asking them to open the sluice gates in Galway from 15th September, to hold the water in Lough Corrib at Summer levels.
With a series of interlocking turloughs running into the Corrib, he said this move would help in the event of heavy rainfall over the coming months.
Councillor O'Brien made his call, following high rainfall in South Mayo during the month of August, and he says now is the time for the OPW to take action, to prevent flooding this Winter.....
