A Mayo Senator is pleading with the Government to progress a new bill when the Dail returns after the summer recess, which would make it an offence to steal or damage life-saving equipment such as defibrillators and lifebuoys.

Two years ago, Fianna Fail Senator Keith Swanick introduced legislation making such behaviour an offence and imposing a fine and/ or jail term for anyone convicted of interfering with life-saving equipment.

Last week, lifebuoys in Waterford were vandalised and Senbator Swanick is urging the Government to progress the legislation during the new Dail term and send a clear message that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.
