The Teachers' Union of Ireland says its younger members are being discriminated against.

The union says new entrants employed from 2011 earn 10 percent less in their first 10 years than they would have before cutbacks were introduced.

It will ballot their 18,000 members next month to ask if they should renew a mandate for industrial action and even possible strike action.

President of the TUI Seamus Lahart says they simply want salaries restored.
