The number of pubs in Co Mayo has fallen by 21% in the past 13 years.

There are now 98 less pubs in the county than in 2005, according to the latest figures from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.

A new study shows one-fifth of rural pubs closed since 2005, compared to just 1% of pubs in Dublin.

The drinks industry is calling on Government to ease the burden on rural businesses by reducing Ireland's high alcohol excise tax over the next 2 years.
