New figures show almost 6,000 children are waiting to see a social worker.

According to Tusla, 949 of these children are regarded as 'high-priority' cases.

Meanwhile, a total of 600 children in state care are waiting for a social worker to be assigned to them.

Fianna Fáil's spokesperson for children, Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte, says the figures are shocking:
