The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council is calling for a visitors centre to be established in Newport to remember Princess Grace of Monaco, as well Grace O'Malley the Pirate Quinn, and the stained glass artist Harry Clarke.
Irish-American actress Grace Kelly - who later became Princess Grace following her marriage to Prince Ranier of Monaco - had Mayo connections as her grandfather John Peter Kelly was originally from Drimurla, near Newport.
He emigrated to the US in 1887, and the cottage was later purchased by Princess Grace, who tragically died in a car accident in 1982 - before she could realise her dream of building a holiday home in Drimurla.
The last window created by famed stained glass artist Harry Clarke is located at St Patrick's Church in Newport, while the area also has connections with Granuaile - the Pirate Queen of the 16th century.
The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Brendan Mulroy is now calling on the local authority to explore the possibility of a visitors centre to remember all three.
