The Minister for the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Galway deputy Sean Kyne has today allocated €1.5 million to Gaeltacht schools in Galway, Mayo and Meath under the Irish Language Assistants Scheme.
The funding is part of a national allocation by the Minister of almost €3.6 million over the next three years for the scheme which operates in 136 schools including 45 in Galway and 15 in Mayo.
113 language assistants are employed under the scheme to strenghten Irish language skills among pupils with knock-on benefits for the language in the wider community.
The Minister says he’s delighted to have secured extra investment for the Language Assistants Scheme. With €3.6 million nationally - €1.47 million in Galway, Mayo and Meath – participating schools will benefit from Irish language assistants for 32 weeks of the school year – an extra six weeks at primary level – and for 31 weeks at secondary schools.
