Rail passengers attempting to board the early morning train yesterday at Ballyhaunis found the station was closed when they arrived.

Passengers managed to access the train through an adjoining goods yard.

Midwest News contacted Iarnrod Eireann today to ask why the station was closed.

A spokesperson for the company explained that an issue occurred at Ballyhaunis station yesterday morning when a member of staff was on annual leave. The company says a security company staff member was to open the station for passengers travelling on the 7.15 Westport train to Dublin, arriving in Ballyhaunis at 8.05am, but due to a mix up that did not happen.

The spokesperson said that when passengers affected alerted the Iarnrod Eireann Customer Service person on board the train, that person opened up Ballyhaunis train station and the station operated as normal for the rest of the day.

The company has apologised to passengers inconvenienced by the mix- up.
