A Roscommon Senator is calling on her colleagues in Government to improve pay and conditions for members of the Defence Forces.
Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has raised the issue this week with Taoiseach Leo Varadker and the Minister for Defence Paul Kehoe.
She says members of the defence forces are among the lowest-paid in the Civil Service at present, and better pay and conditions are needed to improve retention rates with the force and to attract new recruits.
The Independent Pay Commission is currently looking at the matter, and is expected to publish a report in the coming weeks.
Senator Maura Hopkins says, following that report, she wants to see swift action on this issue, as members of the defence forces and their families are currently relying on the Family Income Supplement to receive a decent income.
