Gardai in Ballina are seeking witnesses following a number of incidents in the town in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A young man was assaulted in the Market Square area of the town at about 5am yesterday morning.

A short time later, a female was assaulted in the Mill View Crescent area of Ballina.

Gardai say this incident occurred between 5.15 and 5.30 am, and they're asking anyone who witnessed either assault to come forward.

It's understood neither of the victims sustained serious injuries.

Subsequently, a number of burglaries took place at private houses in the Oakwood Drive, Greenhills and Glenreee areas of Ballina, and a car was taken from outside one of the houses.

The silver-grey coloured Audi A6 was later found burnt out in the Mill Street car park.

Gardai say they're following a definite line of enquiry, and a man was arrested late last night and is being detained for questioning at Ballina Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act .

Gardai believe all of these incidents are connected, and are asking anyone with information to contact Ballina Garda Station at 096 - 20560 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Ballina Gardai have also thanked the public for their co-operation and assistance, as the investigation continues.
