Donegal Gardaí have paid a tribute to their late colleague Robert McCallion on the 10th anniversary of his death.

Garda McCallion, a native of Swinford in Co Mayo who was based in Letterkenny, was  seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while investigating an attempted robbery of another car at Tara Court in Letterkenny .

He passed away almost two weeks later on 7th April 2009 at the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

Members of An Garda Síochána in Donegal posted a touching tribute to Robbie on Facebook yesterday.

They said he's remembered as fondly now as he was then, and have asked people to keep Robert in their thoughts as he paid the ultimate sacrifice, protecting and serving the people of Letterkenny.

Garda McCallion, a well-known footballer, was accorded a State funeral in Swinford, and the local GAA pitch - the Robert McCallion Memorial Park in Swinford - is named after him.
