Galway County Councillor Michael "Stroke" Fahy has died.

The Ardrahan-based public representative who was in his late 70's was first elected to Galway County Council in 1979 and successfully defended his seat for four decades - having been re-elected in 1985,1991, 1999 and 2004.

He was elected as an Independent in 2009 and once again won his seat on the council in 2014.

He resigned from Fianna Fail in 2004 after it emerged that Gardai were investigating him for misappropriation of  local authority funds.

He served a jail sentence in 2007, but his conviction was later overturned.

Councillor Fahy rejoined Fianna Fail last December, and was selected as a party candidate to run in the Gort / Kinvara area in next month's local elections.

Tributes are being paid to the long-serving councillor, who has passed away after a short illness.
