High winds have left 1,700 homes and businesses without power this morning, mostly in the west of the country.

An ESB spokeswoman said the outages represented a normal winter's day for the service, but she said the 'tail end of high winds' had had an impact on power lines.

Crews from ESB Networks were prepared for storm winds and are now working to restore power today.

There are customers without power today in the Carrowbeg area of Westport as well as pockets of Charletsown and Claremorris.

The ESB say they hope to have power restored by lunchtime today.
