A new transatlantic telecoms cable linking Mayo to the US and Scandinavia could be in operation by the end of this year.

The Irish Times reports that Aquacomms, an Irish communications company, is seeking a foreshore licence from the Government for an undersea cable that will come ashore close to Louisburg.

Facebook and Google are partners in the project along with Aquacomms and Norwegian company Bulk, which builds data centres and telecommunications networks.

Kevin Foley, Aquacomms' chief financial officer, says it's hoped the cable could be up and running by Christmas, if the project gets through the planning process and its foreshore licence application is successful.

Mayo County Council has granted permission to America Europe Connect 2 to build a cable-landing station at Old Head, Louisburg, which is part of the project.

The cable will carry voice, data, videos, pictures and other telecoms messages between the two continents.
