Motorists are being warned to take extra caution today, following heavy snowfall across the West.

Temperatures dropped to minus four degrees in places overnight, and are expected to drop to between minus 1 and minus 4 tonight in Connacht.

Heavy snow showers this morning are causing some difficulties for motorist, with reports coming in of a number of vehicles going off the road in locations across Co Mayo.

While most main roads and motorways have been gritted, extra care is advised on secondary and local roads.

The heavy snow is causing some disruption at Ireland West Airport Knock.

While this morning's flight from Stansted landed, there was a delay in the Manchester flight arriving, and the Ryanair flight from Luton to Knock was diverted to Shannon.

Passengers should check with their airline for updates.

Met Eireann says today will see the heaviest snowfall, while drier weather is on the way for tomorrow and Saturday, but remaining very cold with severe frost at night.
