The 2019 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition will be officially opened later today by President Michael D Higgins.

This year, Mayo is represented by three schools - Coláiste Chomain, Rossport, St Mary's Secondary School in Ballina and Coláiste Pobail Acla in Achill.

The Achill students have created a device aimed at preventing or reducing sexual offences, which has been submitted in the Technology category.

The students from Coláiste Chomain in Rossport are asking "How Safe are our Roads" with their investigation of drivers knowledge of the rules of the road, by re-testing experienced drivers with the driver theory test.

The Ballina students have researched the effects of coastal erosion, and how to recycle sea shells into coastal protection and a safe habitat for sea life.

550 projects will be on display at the 55th annual BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, which will be officially opened later today at the RDS and opens to the public from tomorrow until Saturday.
