Gardai in Co Sligo are investigating the theft of a life-size bronze statue, from the main carpark in Drumcliffe.

The statue was installed beside Drumcliffe Church and Cemetery, where poet WB Yeats is buried.

The sculpture is part of a larger piece depicting a man contemplating the words of the Yeats poem "He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven".

It's believed the statue was stolen sometime between Saturday evening and yesterday morning.

The Drumcliffe Development Association, who had fundraised for the project, are appealing to anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area during that time to contact gardaí.

Gardaí have also appealed to anyone with information to contact Sligo Garda Station on 071 9157000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.
