Funding totaling 2.8m euro has been allocated to two projects in Mayo today under the Rural Regeneration Project.

Today the Government launched a one billion euro fund for investment in rural towns and villages with a population under 10,000 over the next 10 years.

24.4m has been allocated from that fund today to 18 projects nationwide and 2 of those are in Co Mayo.

2.1m has been granted to the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan, Claremorris for the construction of an air dome.

The dome will be able to facilitate GAA and other sporting codes and will cost a total of 3m euro to construct.

Meanwhile just under 800,000 euro has been allocated for the provision and redevelopment of 8 digital hubs at 6 locations in the Gaeltacht areas in Mayo. The hubs will be located in Belmullet, Geesala, Aughleam, Achill, Tourmakeady and Greanai/Ballina, with 2 facilities each in Belmullet and Achill.

The application by Udaras na Gaeltachta for the hubs is in an effort to create jobs in the Gaeltacht areas in Mayo.

Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring told Midwest News today that this funding will make a significant difference in rural areas
