A pedestrian who was fatally injured after being hit by a car in Co Galway on Saturday evening has been named locally.

59-year old Marek Pakla, a Polish national who was living in Ballinasloe, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal collision occurred at about 7pm on Saturday evening at Kilclooney near Ballinasloe on a stretch of road known as the bog road to Ahascragh.

His body was removed to Galway University Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The driver of the car was uninjured.

This brings to 127 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year, 36 of whom were pedestrians.
