The Court Service has confirmed that it will not be re-opening the Westport Courthouse and is looking for submissions on what to do with the property.

The courthouse in Westport is closed since 2013 and all court hearings for the Westport district have since been heard in Castlebar Courthouse.

At yesterday’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, the Cathaoirleach Cllr Blackie Gavin said he had received a letter from the regional officer of the Court Service seeking submissions from the council on plans they may now have for the building.

Local Fianan Fail councillor Brendan Mulroy says it’s a sad day for Westport and rural Ireland, to see another service lost to the region, but he believes that there are a number of voluntary organisations in the town that could put the building to good use, working with Mayo County Council.

He told Midwest News today that he had campaigned for the retention of the court services in Westport, but agreed yesterday's announcement was not surprising.
