Two high definition CCTV cameras have been installed on the Newport to Castlebar road in a bid to crackdown on so called “boy racers” in the area.
Mayo County Council’s Road Safety Office is installing the CCTV system in the area of Derrinumera landfill site, to assist gardai in identifying and apprehending “boy racers”.
The area has previously featured on an RTE documentary on the issue of “boy racers”, with local residents expressing dismay as their lives have been turned into a “living nightmare” by nuisance drivers racing, skidding, honking horns, flashing lights and blaring loud music in the middle of the night.
Mayo road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons says the local authority is turning to CCTV in a partnership to stamp out the scourge of “boy racers” doing donuts on public roads, endangering their lives and the lives of others.
