Up to 40,000 people are expected in Ballina today for the annual Heritage Day - one of the highlights of the Ballina Salmon Festival.

Gardai are advising that a traffic management plan will be in place throughout the day, and the town centre has been closed to traffic since early morning.

Traffic from the Dublin Road and travelling towards Bonniconlon or Sligo should use Hill Street, which is remaining open today.

Due to the large number of visitors expected, Gardai are advising that there will be a strict clampdown on illegal parking, and Gardai will tow away vehicles that are parked illegally.

Meanwhile, the Garda Band will be one of the music highlights of Heritage Day, taking to the stage at Ballina Post Office between 2 and 4pm.
