A company headed-up by a Sligo man has installed the pitch where today's opening ceremony and first game of the FIFA World Cup are kicking off in Russia.
Irish-owned company SIS pitches was selected to design, construct and install 6 of the 12 stadium pitches for Russia 2018.
CEO George Mullen from Sligo says a team of 12 people from SIS Pitches will be on standby throughout the tournament to maintain the Luzhniki Stadium pitch in Moscow, as well as maintaining three training pitches which will be used by national teams training at the Moscow venue.
Millions of people around the world will watch the opening ceremony this afternoon, which will be followed by the opening match featuring hosts Russia taking on Saudia Arabia - that kicks off at 4pm Irish time.
SIS Pitches, based in Sligo, supplies sports surfaces for schools, colleges, universities, sports clubs and local authorities around the world.
