The scene of a light aircraft crash in County Mayo is being examined.

A local  man in his fifties died in the incident which happened yesterday evening.

He was the pilot and the only person in the aircraft at the time when it came down just outside Ballina.

It is understood the Air Accident Investigation Unit has removed the wreckage of the plane from the crash site, between Ballina and Bonniconlon and transported it to a hanger in Meath for further examination.

A post-mortem on the deceased man is due to take place on Monday.
