It is with profound sadness that Rupert’s (Joe’s) family share the news of his death on Sunday, December 29, 2024, with his partner Agnes by his side and in the compassionate and respectful care of An Teaghlach Uilinn Nursing Home, Moycullen.
Rupert is predeceased by his wife Chris (née Hickey) and by his parents, R.J. and Julia and by his brothers Frank and Eamon.
He will be sadly missed by Agnes and by his much-loved family; his children Joseph, Niall, Karen, Julie, Justin and Shane, daughters-in-law Áine, Susan and Tracy, Shane’s partner Orla, grandchildren Joseph, Siobhán and Carolyn (U.S.A.), Conor and Ruby, Aoibheann, Donnacha, Sadhbh and Alannah and Claudia, his sister Kathleen and fondly remembered by the extended McElwee family and friends.

Reposing at the O’Flaherty Funeral Parlour, Munster Avenue, Galway (H91V1K8) on Thursday, January 02, 2025 from 5:00pm with removal at 6:30pm to the Church of Christ the King, Salthill.
Requiem Mass will be celebrated for Rupert (Joe) on Friday, January 03 at 10am and following Mass he will be laid to rest in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina to arrive at 1.30pm approximately.
Memorial donations if desired to the Galway or Mayo Hospice.
