  • Westport Gardai are investigating after the traffic warden in the town was involved in an altercation with an owner of a vehicle.

    The altercation occurred on James Street shortly before midday when the owner of a vehicle is alleged to have reacted angrily when he was asked to refrain from parking in a disable space.

    Midwest News understand the traffic warden had to be treated by a doctor at the scene.

    Gardai attended the scene and investigations are ongoing.

  • Westport Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a break-in to the Westport Country Lodge Hotel in the early hours of last Wednesday morning December 12th.

    A safe containing a significant amount of cash and cheques was taken.

    The Hotel has shared CCTV footage of the incident on their Facebook page which shows a masked man carrying out the crime.

    Westport Gardai are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behavior in the area to contact them on 098-50230.

    Investigations are ongoing.

  • Gardai in Mayo are investigating a single vehicle collision which occurred on Clare Island last night.

    One man died after his car collided with a ditch.

    The male teenager died when the car he was driving collided with a ditch at The Quay, Clare Island at approximately 1am this morning.

    He was pronounced dead at the scene, however his age has not been released yet.

    Gardaí at Louisburgh are investigating the single vehicle crash.

    The road has been closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic experts.

    Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information to contact Westport Gardai on 098-50230 or any Garda Station.

    Is comes as the RSA has issued a warning to road users on this August Bank Holiday weekend.

    The organisation says Sunday's are one of the most dangerous days of the week on Irish roads.

    They are asking people to slow down and keep within the speed limit at all times

     

  • A man is due before Castlebar court  today charged in connection with the theft of a caravan and other thefts in the Westport area last May.

    Yesterday a man in his forties was arrested in the Ronanstown area of Dublin.

    He was charged with the thefts and was brought in custody to appear before a sitting of Castlebar court today.

     

  • Belmullet's Shane Nallen who is a Garda based in Westport will complete his 300km for Grace this evening.

    Shane has put in a mammoth effort over the last month and has raised over €52,000.

    Grace Walsh, who celebrated her 9th birthday last week lives in Belmullet and suffers from a number of conditions that require 24-hour care.

    Shane has been running 10km every day since May 7th and will complete his final run at 6 o'clock in Westport this evening.

    Shane says he is overwhelmed by the generosity people all over the world have shown towards the cause.

  • Westport Gardai are seeking any witnesses to an incident that occurred just before Christmas in which a pedestrian was injured.

    The male pedestrian was injured near Carrowbeg Stores on the Castlebar Road in Westport at about 12.30 am on the morning of Monday 23rd December.

    The man was taken by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital where he was treated for his injures.

    Gardai are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward, and particularly a woman who attended Westport Garda Station following the incident.

    Yesterday Westport gardai travelled to London to execute a European Arrest Warrant for a man who ,last year, was convicted of a Section 3 Assault and failed to turn up in court.

    Gardai in Westport had applied for the European Arrest warrant when they became aware that the man was living in London.

    They executed the warrant and the man, now in garda custody, is due to appear before a sitting of Galway Circuit court  today.

     

  • Gardai in Westport are investigating a number of burglaries over the past two weeks.

    Burglaries were reported at The West Bar in the town, as well as the NCT Centre on Lodge Road and Duffy's Tool & Hire on the Castlebar Road in Westport.

    On the morning of 22nd February at about 4.30 am, the back door was forced at the West Bar on Bridge Street, and a small amount of stock was taken.

    The alarm was activated, and the raider had fled before Gardai arrived.

    On the night of 27th February, an attempt was made to break into the NCT centre on Lodge Road in Westport, but cutting through panelling.

    Nothing was taken in this incident.

    Last Thursday night 28th February, a break-in occurred at Duffy's Tool Hire on Castlebar Road, Westport.

    A number of power tools were taken along with a sum of cash, when entry was gained by breaking an office window.

    Anyone with information on these incidents should contact Westport Garda Station.

    Gardai are also investigating a break-in at the curate's house in Foxford at the weekend.

    The burglary took place at about 11 am on Sunday morning when a rear window at the house was broken, and a sum of money was taken.
