  • The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) has reiterated its call for Budget 2020 to include measures that will favour investment in tackling energy poverty in advance of any carbon tax increase.

SVP says that it is fully supportive of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and invest in a sustainable renewable energy generation.

The charity wants measures introduced in tandem with climate action policies to protect those on low income, rural households and those with poorly insulated, cold homes and who are reliant on solid fuel.

Head of Social Justice for SVP Dr. Tricia Keithly told Midwest News that the burden on reducing climate emissions shouldn’t be trust on poor rural communities who rely on cars for transportation.
