Suspect Device

  • Gardai and the Army's bomb disposal team are dealing with a suspect device this morning in the Mount Assumpta area of Ballina.

    Gardai say the area has been sealed off, and a number of residents were evacuated overnight and are being accomodated with neighbours and relatives.

    There's limited access to the area from Lord Edward Street and McDermott Street, while areas of Mercy Road and Fenian Row are also restricted.

    Gardai have confirmed that the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene, and roads in the area are expected to re-open in the next hour.

    Schools in the area are open as normal this morning.

    The Army's EOD team has now left the scene and taken the device with them for further examination to determine if it's viable.

    Gardai say roads in the area have now reopened, and their enquiries are ongoing into the discovery of the suspect device in the early hours of this morning.

     

    It's understood the alarm was raised at about 3am, the area was sealed off, and a number of residents were evacuated overnight.

    They're now returning to their homes, while schools in the area are open as normal this morning.

     

     

     

     

  • Gardai have confirmed to Midwest News this morning that yesterday’s device which was found in Ballina was an elaborate hoax and of no danger to the public.

    A suspect device was discovered at approximately 3am yesterday outside a house in the Mount Assumpta area of Ballina, which resulted in the area being sealed off and some residents having to evacuated during the night.

    The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal service took the device away for examination and the area was made safe to the public.

    Gardai told Midwest News this morning that the device was not viable and was of no danger to the public.

  • Gardaí have found ammunition and a suspect device in a search in Co Galway.

    The search was carried out yesterday as part of an intelligence-led operation of lands at Castledaly.

    In a statement, Gardai say members from Gort and Loughrea conducted the search of woodlands, and at about 2pm yesterday, found two boxes of ammunition and a suspect device during the search operation.

    The Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit attended the scene and made safe the suspect device.

    Gardai say all items seized will be subject to technical examination, and their investigations are ongoing.

    It's thought the find may be linked to dissident republican activity.

     

     

  • A suspect device was removed from a house in Sligo last night.

    The device, which is believed to be an old one, was found in a house on the Cleveragh Road around 5pm yesterday evening.

    Gardai evacuated the area around the house and the road in the area was also closed.

    The Explosive Ordnance Dispostal Team removed the device and the road reopened overnight.
