• The Castlerea prisoner that escaped from custody while attending the Emergency Department of Mayo University Hospital on Saturday morning last is back in garda custody.

    The Prison Service confirmed to Midwest News this morning that the man in his thirties was apprehended by gardai near Tullamore last night.

    He is now in garda custody.

    The prisoner took off by foot from the ED of the Castlebar hospital at about 10am last Saturday morning.

    The garda search for the man ended approx 72 hours later when he was discovered in county Offaly last night.


  • Gardai are seeking public assistance in locating a prisoner who escaped from custody after being brought to Mayo University Hospital for treatment on Saturday morning last.

    The prisoner remains at large this morning, after the Irish Prison Service confirmed the incident happened at around 10am on Saturday morning last.

    The man, who was on remand in Castlerea Prison on a burglary charge, escaped the hospital on foot.

    He is 34 years of age and is described as being of an “athletic build” with brown hair.

  • Searches are continuing in Mayo for a prisoner who escaped from a hospital over the weekend.

    The man, who was on remand at Castlerea prison, is understood to have escaped from Mayo University hospital on Saturday morning after being brought to the facility for treatment.

    The 34-year-old, who is described as having brown hair and an athletic build, escaped from the hospital on foot and searches are currently ongoing.

    The Irish Prison Service confirmed to Midwest News this evening that the prisoner still remains at large.

    Anyone who may have seen the man, or know of his whereabouts, is asked to contact their local Garda station.
