McBride Nursing Home

  • Home Care Services have been cancelled again this week at the McBride Nursing Home in Westport.

As reported previously on Midwest News, people expecting to avail of day care service at the unit are having their service cancelled at the last minute, on a regular basis over the past number of weeks.

It has now emerged that there are eight staff vacancies at the McBride home which haven’t been filled.

Five of these posts haven’t been filled since 2018 and the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Brendan Mulroy says the HSE can say what they want but this is definitely a downgrading of the McBride Nursing Home.

Mayo Fianna Fail TD Lisa Chambers requested details from the Health Minister regarding the number of staff employed at the nursing unit and Councillor Mulroy is now calling on the HSE to come out and make a statement of intent on their plans for the McBride Home.

  • People expecting to avail of day care service at the McBride Home in Westport, are having their service cancelled at the last minute, on a regular basis over the past number of weeks, and the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Westport based Fianna Fail councillor Brendan Mulroy says it completely unfair to the service users and their families.

The HSE run home had committed to providing a 4 to 5 day, Day Care Service at it’s Westport Nursing Home facility some years ago, but has only provide 3 days of Day Care a week for some time now.

The Cathaoirleach told Midwest News today that the problem is that the three day service tends to be severely impacted each Summer, when the HSE cancels planned Day Care and leaves service users and their carers high and dry at very short notice.

  • A protest is taking place in Westport on today to help save the local McBride Nursing Home.

The demonstration gets underway at the Octagon at 2 p.m., and aims to highlight the scaling back of services at the facility

The respite and day-care services at the HSE-run home have been suspended, with staff shortages being blamed.

  • A Westport councillor is questioning why the day care service is not being provided at present at the McBride Community Nursing Home in Westport.

Independent Councillor Christy Hyland says the day care service is a very important service, particularly for elderly people living alone.

While the day care service was being provided a few days per week, he says it's not available at all over the past number of weeks, and is calling on the four TDs in Mayo to play their part in having the service restored as soon as possible.

Midwest News has contacted the HSE to enquire about the day care service at the McBride nursing home, and we' re awaiting a reply.
