  • As knackeries remain closed around the country, due to an ongoing dispute with the Department of Agriculture, a Sligo TD says an interim solution has been agreed for farmers with fallen animals.

    Fianna Fail TD Eamon Scanlon says farmers can apply to their local agricultural office for a permit to bury dead animals on their land, while the dispute continues.

    Talks between the Department and the Animal Collectors' Association broke down last week, resulting in knackeries across the country closing their gates indefinitely.

    The knackeries claim business is not viable under the current level of funding.

    Deputy Scanlon says he hopes the dispute can be resolved shortly, but in the meantime, farmers can get a permit to bury dead animals themselves....
