Keem beach

  • An Achill beach has been named as one of the best beaches in Europe by leading travel publication Lonely Planet.

In its latest round-up of sandy, wild and breathtaking beaches, the guide included Keem Bay in Achill at the no. 18 spot.

The prestigious publication has built a global following for its recommendations and insider travel tips.

In its description of Keem beach, the editors said: "Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way  hides a crock of gold when it comes dramatic coastlines – and nowhere more so than at gloriously remote Keem Bay at the far west of Achill Island."

The stunning Achill location is included alongside many of Europe's most breathtaking beaches.

  • Dog's Bay in Connemara has been named the most beautiful beach in the country.

The Lonely Planet's newest listing ranked Trá Mór in Dunfanaghy in County Donegal as the runner up while Keem Bay on Achill Island came third.

Trá Mór in Achill and Streedagh Strand in Sligo are also included in the top ten beaches in Ireland.
