Joe Daly

  • Young people across the country are planning to hold a School Strike on May 24th calling on all political candidates and parties to support radical action to halt runaway climate change and prevent environmental disaster.

Joe Daly the local election candidate for People Before Profit in the Castlebar Municipal District is calling on the people of the county to show solidarity and support for the youth.

As a teacher and father, Mr Daly says young people are worried about the future of the planet and take very seriously the warnings coming from the scientific community.

He accuses the government of  blocking the People Before Profit “Keep it in the Ground Bill” from moving through the Dáil and is instead focusing on a carbon tax, which he claims,  has been shown to have no effect in countries like Canada where it has been tried.

Joe Daly insists we need taxation on the profits of the big polluting fossil fuel companies so we can use that revenue to create a public transport system, retrofit homes with insulation, invest in offshore wind and wave energy.

  • Mayo FG Councillor Cyril Burke is facing an internal party disciplinary hearing, after findings were made against him by the State's ethics watchdog.

Councillor Burke was found to have breached Standards in Public Office Commission rules arising from his involvement in an alleged plan to secure zoning for land owned by another councillor.

SIPO found Councillor Cyril Burke acted in contravention of the code of conduct for politicians, in his dealings with Independent Councillor Frank Durcan, who also had findings made against him.

Fine Gael's national executive has now decided to refer Cyril Burke to the party's disciplinary committee.

The matter is due to be debated this evening at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council in Castlebar.

Outside the council offices, a protest is taking place this afternoon in relation the SIPO findings against the two councillors.

People Before Profit candidate in the Castlebar area Joe Daly, who's organised the demonstration, is calling for Councillors Burke and Durcan to resign over the matter.

  • As the general election campaign continues, pension age has become a controversial topic.

Fine Gael is proposing the increase the age for a state pension to 67 next year, and 68 by 2028.

People Before Profit's election candidate in Mayo Joe Daly has described the move as "disgraceful",and he's calling to have the pension age restored to 65.

At present, people forced to retire at 65 can claim Jobseekers Allowance for a year before qualifying for the State pension, but Joe Daly believes the pension should be restored to 65 and increased.....
