Road users are being urged to take extra caution this weekend as Met Éireann has forecast showers of hail and temperatures as low as minus three degrees.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is advising drivers to be aware of dangerous road conditions hail showers bring, particularly on motorways and dual carriageways.
A sharp change in temperatures will arrive on Friday afternoon, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 4 on Friday night.
Met Eireann is warning of very cold weather this weekend, with wintry showers of rain, hail and sleet and sub-zero temperatures at night
The Road Safety Authority says the difficulty with hail showers is their unpredictability and localised nature, and can turn a safe stretch of road into a “carpet of hailstones” very quickly.
They're advising drivers to be on guard to the potential danger posed by hailstones. Motorists should reduce their speed, and avoid hard braking or sudden steering movements.
