  • A 65-year-old man has died in a three-vehicle collision in Mayo.

    It’s understood the man is from the East Mayo area.

    The collision between two cars and a lorry occurred on the N5 at Swinford, close to the Kiltimagh Road/Applegreen Junction.

    Another person has been taken to hospital following the collision.

    Their condition is currently unknown.

    The road is closed between the junction for Kiltimagh and the Kilkelly junction.

    Gardai are advising motorists to take an alternative route if possible – if travelling east or west. Possible alternatives are through Kiltimagh and Foxford. Also for people travelling to the airport, they should go through Swinford town and back out onto the N5.

    The road will remain closed for some time.

  • A 68 year old woman has died following a crash in Roscommon last night.

    The three car collision happened on the N63 Lanesboro to Roscommon road at around 9:45pm.

    The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to the mortuary at Roscommon Hospital.

    The two drivers of the other vehicles were brought to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

    Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

  • A motorcyclist has been killed in a crash involving a school bus in Co Leitrim.

    It happened this morning in Cloone.

    This crash, between a motorcyclist and school bus, happened on the Cloone-Fenagh road just before 8 am.

    The motorcyclist, who is in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    His body has been removed to Sligo University hospital for a post-mortem exam.

    The bus driver was taken to the same hospital to be treated for shock.

    Bus Eireann has confirmed that five children were on board the bus at the time of the incident, but they were not injured. 

  • The funeral arrangements have been confirmed for the victim of a fatal traffic accident in Swinford last Friday.

    Brian Bacon from Cloughvolley, Aghamore, and formerly of St. Helen's, Liverpool, died following a three-vehicle collision on the N5 at Carracanda, Swinford.

    The accident occurred at approximately 12.15pm on Friday.

    Mr. Bacon was pronounced dead at the scene and was removed to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

    The male driver of a second car received minor injuries from the collision.

    The deceased man’s remains will be removed from Kilcoyne's Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar, on Thursday at 11.30 a.m. to Shannon Crematorium for service at 2.30 p.m.

  • Gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses after two men in their 20's died following a single vehicle road collision on the Killala Road in Ballina last night.

    The collision occurred at about 11.15 pm when a car, carrying three men, collided with a tree near the Costcutter store on the Killala Road.

    One man in his late 20's was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The other two men - also in their 20's - were taken to Mayo University Hospital where one died later, while the third man remains in a critical condition in hospital.

    The names of the deceased have not yet been released, but they are both understood to be from the Ballina area.

    The road was closed for a time to allow for a forensic examination to be carried out but has since reopened to traffic.

    Gardai are also appealing to the drivers of any vehicles that may have passed through the townland of Kilmoremoy, close to the Costcutters Supermarket, between 10.20pm and 11.15pm, and who may have dash-cam footage, to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096-20560 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

  • A man in his 70s has died following a two car collision in County Galway.

    The incident involving a jeep and car happened on the N63 at Rooaunmore, Claregalway at around 5pm on Friday.

    A post mortem is due to take place at a later date.

    No further injuries were reported.
