• The need to develop rail freight out of this county was again highlighted by Castlebar based Fianna Fail councillor Martin McLoughlin at the annual budget meeting of Mayo county council earlier this week.

The councillor who is a member of West on track says the extension of the railway line from Athenry to Claremorris is vital for the county’s exporters, particularly in light of the developments around Brexit.

However, he says in addition the development of rail freight is the country’s best route to reducing our Carbon footprint.

Cllr McLoughlin says 75 percent of the 90 million euro required to get the Athenry to Claremorris line back in action, can be secured from the EU.
