European Tug of War

  • The 2019 European Senior and World U23 and Junior Outdoor Tug Of War Championships at the Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar will get underway from tomorrow and run right up until Sunday.

    This is the first time the European Tug of War Championships have been held in Ireland since Wexford in 1987.

    The event will bring over 1,000 athletes to Castlebar with many more spectators attending.

    Ireland have always done well at Tug of War and it is not that long ago since a local Mayo team, Lakehill from Knockmore, won the World championship representing both their club and country in Switzerland in 2012. 

    Donal Ward from the Lakehill team has been telling Midwest Sport that it’s a huge international event and a great economic boost for the County Town.

  • The World Tug of War Championships are in full swing in Breaffy.

     

    There was tough pulling in the 680kg with two groups of eleven teams and only two team progressing from each group to the semi finals.

     

    Lakehill pulled well but unfortunately did not get through to the semis.

     

    The winners of the 680kg were Heure form Netherlands, silver was Valleitrekkers from Netherlands and bronze went to Lincoln from England.

     

    G&B who are Ballygar based pulled very well in men's 560kg and got a bronze medal.

     

    The winners of the 560kg were Sins from Switzerland with Cornhill from Scotland runners up.
