Nursing homes face a major clampdown after it was found that some homes were charging residents for additional services.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission is to launch legally binding guidelines for contracts of care in nursing homes later.

The Irish Independent reports that the new rules will lay out how and when nursing homes can introduce extra fees.

The fees - which have hugely added to families' costs- included paying for social activities and therapies not covered under the Fair Deal scheme.
