Ceann Comhairle

  • Independent Roscommon deputy Denis Naughten has failed in his attempt to be elected as the as Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil.
    Fianna Fáil's Seán Ó Fearghaíl has been re-elected.
    The clerk of the house, Peter Finnegan, said Mr Ó Fearghaíl reached the quota with 130 votes.
    Denis Naughten received 28 votes.
    TDs are gathered for the first meeting of the 33rd Dáil this afternoon amid ongoing efforts to form a government in the aftermath of Election 2020.



    Nominations close later today for the position of Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil.

    The incumbent Sean O'Feargháil is interested in staying on in the job, while Roscommon Independent TD Denis Naughten and Fine Gael's newly-elected TD in Sligo-Leitrim Frank Feighan are both believed to be interested in the position.

    The new Ceann Comhairle will be elected by secret ballot when the 33rd Dail convenes tomorrow for the first time.
