  • Midwest Sport understands that Carnacon’s appeal against their removal from the Mayo Club Championship and League will be heard by Connacht LGFA on Thursday evening next.

A vote was taken at a Mayo Ladies County Board meeting on Tuesday night which will remove Carnacon from the championship. They have the usual right of appeal on that vote.

The club has been sanctioned under Rule 288.

12 players and 2 selectors left the Mayo Senior Panel prior to the clash with Cavan, eight of those were from the Carnacon club. The players cited welfare issues and personal reasons for withdrawing from the panel.

The decision means that Carnacon will not be able to defend their county, provincial and All-Ireland championships this year, if an appeal is not successful.

    Kilkerrin/Clonberne 4-9

    Carnacon 2-4

Olivia Divilly hit top form as reigning champions Kilkerrin/Clonberne advanced to the Connacht Senior Club Championship Final after victory over rivals Carnacon at the Connacht Centre of Excellence.

Kevin Reidy’s side made better use of the wind and goals from Annette Clarke, Lynsey Noone, Louise Ward and Ailish Morrissey were enough to earn a spot in the decider.

This match was moved to Bekan after the original venue in Clonberne was deemed unplayable by referee Gus Chapman following a downpour one hour before throw-in.

Kilkerrin/Clonberne had the breeze at their backs in the opening half and they took a 2-5 to 1-2 lead into half-time thanks to goals from Lynsey Noone and Clarke.

Cora Staunton didn’t start for Carnacon and they lacked a killer instinct up front while the Galway champions raced into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after the opening quarter.

Olivia Divilly sent over her first free after 30 seconds and doubled her tally in the third minute. Divilly was just back from her AFL trials in Australia and showed wonderful athleticism to get back and block a Fiona McHale effort.

Then in the 15th minute she added a third Kilkerrin/Clonberne free and they were in complete control.

But Staunton was introduced for Deirdre Joyce and Carnacon began to gain a foothold in the opposition half.

In the 20th minute Staunton got possession and sent in a high ball towards Lisa Murphy’s goal with Erina Flannery getting to the ball first. It was a crucial goal and Staunton added a point as Carnacon took their only lead in the game.

Kilkerrin/Clonberne retained their composure, however, and Ailish Morrissey and Eva Noone scored back-to-back points. Staunton scored again but Kilkerrin/Clonberne dominated the rest of the half.

Clarke finished low from the penalty spot in the 26th minute after Louise Ward had been fouled. And one minute later Lynsey Noone crashed her shot to the Carnacon net.

There were six points separating the sides at the start of the second-half and Louise Ward scored her goal four minutes after the resumption when she raced through the heart of the Carnacon defence.

Clarke and Olivia Divilly extended the lead but Doireann Hughes gave the assist and Aoife Brennan’s goal brought Carnacon back into the game.

The Mayo outfit were 3-7 to 2-4 in arrears with 19 minutes remaining but Morrissey showed strength and determination to finish the killer fourth goal in the 48th minute, and the Galway champions now go on to face Roscommon's Kilbride in the final.

  • Statement from Carnacon Ladies Gaelic Football Club as of 22nd August in response to the decision of Mayo LGFA to remove our Senior team from league and championship football for the 2018 season.

Understandably, the entire panel, management, club officers, our families and supporters are devastated by the sequence of events which have transpired.

The Club is in the process of preparing an appeal of this decision to lodge with the Connacht LGFA, so at this point in time we feel it would be inappropriate to comment any further.

We hope you can understand our position and respect our decision.

At the end of the day - all our members want is to play football and we hope to get this opportunity again in the not too distant future.

We would like to thank the general public for their support and goodwill in this unprecedented situation.

  • Carnacon Ladies GAA will receive special recognition this evening for their recent exploits.

Mayo county council are hosting a civic reception for the six-times all Ireland senior ladies champions this evening at Lough Lannagh in recognition of their achievements.

  • Carnacon have been removed from the Mayo Senior Club Football Championship, after a number of their players were withdrawn from the Mayo Senior Football panel earlier this summer.

Midwest Sport understands a vote was taken at a Mayo Ladies County Board meeting last night which will remove Carnacon from the championship. They have the usual right of appeal on that vote.

Midwest Sport understands that the club has been sanctioned under Rule 288, which looks at the club as opposed to the players individually, as the Carnacon club stated that they would be withdrawing their players last month.

Midwest Sport has contacted the Mayo Ladies County Board and Carnacon for comment on the matter. Mayo County Board is due to revert with official statement on the matter.

While a spokesperson for Carnacon told Midwest Sport that they have no comment to make, other than they will be appealing the decision of Mayo LGFA to a higher body within the next few days.

  • The eight Carnacon players who left the Mayo panel have had their suspensions reduced to two weeks after an appeal to the National Appeals Committee last night according to the 42.ie.

The players – Cora Staunton, Fiona McHale, Martha Carter, Marie Corbett, Amy Dowling, Doireann Hughes, Sadhbh Larkin and Saoirse Walsh – were still found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute but their four-week bans were halved.

At an appeal hearing in Tullamore last night, Carnacon also withdrew their appeal of the €500 fine that was handed out 10 days ago.

The All-Ireland club champions now have five days if they wish to lodge an appeal with the LGFA Central Council in the hope of further reducing the suspensions.

But with the Mayo ladies senior football championship due to resume this weekend, the upcoming round of fixtures will go ahead as scheduled — without the eight suspended players — unless Carnacon’s appeal is lodged by 5pm this evening.

  • Funeral arrangements have been confirmed for Jimmy Corbett, who passed away suddenly yesterday.

Jimmy was the founder of the Carnacon club in 1986 and senior team manager with the reigning county and Connacht senior champions.

Since Carnacon was founded, the club has won six All-Ireland Senior Club titles, 16 Connacht crowns and 20 county championship wins, along with various underage titles.

Tributes have been pouring in for Jimmy from right across the sporting spectrum.

His funeral arrangements have also been confirmed – his remains will repose at Carnacon Community Centre on Monday evening from 4-8pm.

He will be laid to rest in Burriscarra Cememtery on Tuesday afternoon following 12.30 Funeral Mass in St Mary’s Church Carnacon.

  • The Ladies Gaelic Football Association has led the tributes to Carnacon founder and manager Jimmy Corbett who has passed away.

Corbett founded the Mayo club in 1986, and oversaw one of the most dominant periods in All Ireland Club Championship history.

Carnacon were crowned All Ireland champions for the first time in 2002, and then on five more occasions between then and 2017.

They've also won 20 county championships, and 16 Connacht titles.

Corbett also helped develop some of the country's finest ever players, including Cora Staunton.

His loss to Carnacon and Mayo has been described as "incalculable".
