The Irish Indoor Rowing Championships (IIRC) took place at the Sports Arena in the University of Limerick yesterday 20th of January 2018. 28 rowers from 2 Mayo Clubs took part yesterday in 2000m, 1000m and 500m Indoor Rowing events. Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club (Doohoma Geesala) and Naomh Micheál Ballycroy had jointly entered rowers and relay teams in Senior Men’s & Womens and Junior Races. 

The results were as follows:

Fiachna Barrett Tullaghan Bay took two gold medals at U14 500metres and distance rows, his first time in the competition. 

Michael Cormack of Naomh Micheal Ballycroy took two silver medals at 500metres and at a distance row. Another first outing in this competition. 

Jonathon Doocey Tullaghan Bay took bronze at U15 , his second bronze medal in these championships having previously won the first medal for the club in 2017. 

Niamh Egan Tullaghan Bay and who is from Crossmolina won silver and bronze in U13 500 metres and distance rows. 

Aimee Carey of Tullaghan Bay took silver in U14 500metres. 

Kathleen Doocey of Tullaghan Bay took bronze in the Women’s 30-39 1000 metres open, her second medal in this competition. 

Sean McManamon of Ballycroy also took bronze in the Men’s 40-40 2000 metres open. 

The Girls Relay Team of Tara Doocey, Alannagh Cosgrove, Niamh Egan and Aimee Carey came second in the 2000 meter relay and the Boys team of Aaron Barrett, Fiachna Barrett, Jonathon Doocey & Micheal Cormack  came second in their relay. 

Fantastic achievement for all rowers and clubs new to this national competition. The clubs also take part in national coastal rowing and curragh racing competitions. They train during the winter months in Geesala Community Centre and on the water at ‘The Ferry’ Tullaghan. 

The club operates under the stewardship of head coach Donal Murphy.
