Councillor Warns public about Scam Mobile Calls

Ten of thousands of scam mobile phone calls are sweeping across the country in an unprecedented surge, according to Ireland’s operators.

The calls often with international prefixes such as 00 231, or 00 269 are designed to trick people into phoning back at premium rates.

The mobile phone typically rings in such cases, just once or twice. The scammers hope that people will automatically call back without looking too closely at the number.

The longer you stay on the return call the more money you lose.

Castlerea based Fianna Fail councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice is advising mobile phone users to be on the alert and not to return calls to unknown numbers.

He told Midwest News if anyone really needs you that would leave a message.
