Castlebar based Fianna Fail councillor Blackie Gavin says with the delay in the completion of the 25 metre swimming pool at Lough Lannagh, in the county town, that the second phase of that development which includes football fields and all weather running tracks may be in jeopardy.
He raised the matter at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District, where he had sought clarification from council management on progress to date on the 11 million euro swimming and outdoor facility in Castlebar.
Director of Services for Mayo County Council, Tom Gilligan in a written report to councillors explained that 60 percent of the swimming pool project is now complete and is expected to be finished in the second quarter of next year. The outdoor facilities are the second phase of the development.
Councillor Gavin called on the Minister for Rural and Regional Affairs Michael Ring to ensure that the capital funding for the football facilities and tracks are in place.
