Dangers of Crossing Roads while Texting or on Mobile phone Highlighted by Mayo road Safety officer

The danger of crossing a road or street while on your mobile phone is being highlighted by Mayo Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons.

Noel is asking parents, ahead of the start of the new school year, to talk to their children about the need to put away the phone while crossing roadways, and to avoid distractions.

He says that while there is an acceptance worldwide of the need to put away the phone while driving, one US state is about to introduce a law banning pedestrians from using their mobile phones while crossing the road.

Noel told Midwest News that he does not believe it’s necessary to introduce such a law here, nonetheless, parents need to talk to their teenage children in particular, about the likely distraction that the phone can be and the potential for fatal or serious road collisions while walking and texting.
